Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) occurs when a person’s heart is unable to pump the blood that their body needs. According to the CDC, CHF is present in more than 6 million adults in the United States and costs the nation more than 30 billion dollars per year. Additionally, heart disease (including heart failure) is the leading cause of death in the US.

The CardioVitals app is a tool that aims to put app users in control of their heart failure diagnosis. Data show that hospital admissions for heart failure are associated with an increased risk of death. The CardioVitals app allows users to consistently track their weight, which can be useful in preventing worsening heart failure events including hospitalization.

The initial release of the app allows users to log their weight using their smart phone. Weight goals can be set in order to warn users when their weight is above the acceptable range. In the current format, CardioVitals can be used in the office by users and healthcare providers to further manage heart failure. The future goal of the CardioVitals app is to include communication with healthcare providers to allow an increasingly integrated approach to heart failure management. Future goals also include educational information to help users better understand their heart failure diagnosis and stay up to date on treatment options.
